Local-first AI Writing Workbench

A reviewable workflow for long-form and short-form fiction.

NovelForge AI is a local-first, author-controlled writing workbench for serial novels, standalone short stories, and linked story series. It organizes outlines, character state, timelines, clues, chapter drafts, and AI tasks without silently changing canonical story memory.

Writing workflow

One workbench from planning to release

Serial novels

Manage storylines, chapter beats, drafts, polishing, summaries, pending memory updates, and continuity checks.

Short stories and series

Support standalone stories and linked series with independent narrative closure and shared cross-story memory.

Structured story memory

Track characters, rules, timelines, clues, and chapter summaries as reviewable data instead of scattered chat history.

Author approval boundary

AI output enters draft or review states first. Canon, story memory, and publishable content still require author confirmation.

Multiple model routes

Connect OpenAI-compatible APIs and assign different routes to chapter drafting, polishing, and other writing tasks.

Local data and backups

Keep the SQLite database, manuscripts, and generated assets on the Mac with a local backup workflow.

Version 0.1.115

0.1.115 writing workbench redesign

  • Long-form projects, short stories, and series now share a compact dark workbench organized around Prepare, Write, Review, and Publish.
  • Adds project switching, command search, project-scoped review alerts, and a read-only AI run console that works across desktop and narrow windows.
  • Rebuilds the project library, series library, writing desk, and chapter workspace while preserving the author-approval and story-memory boundary.
  • The macOS PKG is Developer ID signed, Apple notarized, and stapled.

Local-first

Data and AI boundary

  • Local-first does not mean fully offline. AI, voice, or publishing tasks send relevant context to providers configured by the author.
  • API keys and local settings live in the desktop user-data directory. The installer includes no shared API key or preconfigured cloud account.
  • This is an Apple Silicon macOS single-user test build. Team collaboration, cloud sync, mobile apps, and built-in payments are outside the current scope.
